Madeline Gardiner’s middle of the pack finish in the women’s all-around final  on Thursday at the Youth Olympics hasn't dampened her spirits in the least. On the contrary, it’s energized the 15-year-old gymnast from Cambridge, Ont., for three individual event finals this weekend.

Gardiner, 15, finished 13th in the field of 18 finalists after two falls on balance beam and an error on a tumbling pass during her floor routine.

"I'm a little disappointed with the falls, but it's OK because I know I can go back in event finals and I can totally correct it and I can make it way better," said Gardiner, a contender for Canada’s 2012 Olympic team.

Gardiner started strong on vault, scoring 13.8 with a clean full-twisting Yurchenko and followed up with a 13.15 for an uneven bars routine that included two skills she's performing for the first time in competition.

On beam Gardiner got through a challenging opening sequence: a double turn done in a sit position that finished with her sliding into the splits without her hands touching the beam.

But on the landing of her first acrobatic element, her foot slid, and she fell off the apparatus. A rushed acrobatic sequence later in the routine resulted in a second fall, and her 12.1 score effectively ended her chances for an all-around medal. Gardiner also struggled on her final tumbling pass on floor and wound up with a score of 12.05 after touching her hands to the mat.

Russia's Viktoria Komova, considered by many the top female gymnast in the world right now, coasted to the gold medal, tallying 61.25 points overall, 2.75 points ahead of China's Sixin Tan, who took silver. Italy's Carlotta Ferlito surged to the bronze medal by sticking her landings on floor, her final event, to edge Natsumi Sasada of Japan by 0.25.

Gardiner has three more opportunities for individual event medals on vault, uneven bars and balance beam.

Gardiner said she is still concentrating on earning medals but also on redeeming herself.

"I want to go out and do my best and show that I can come back after a not so great day," Gardiner said. “I just hope that I can represent [Canada] the best and show that I deserve to be here."

Women's vault and uneven bars finals take place Saturday and beam on Sunday.
