At the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival Edmonton’s Brandon O’Neill capped a remarkable return to international competition at the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival on Saturday, winning gold medals on floor and vault in a tri-country meet pitting Canada against top teams from Olympic champion China and the United States. O’Neill, who topped the field in all three events he entered in Friday’s qualification, also earned a bronze medal on parallel bars. Kevin Lytwyn of Stoney Creek, Ont., also won gold on rings, giving the four-man Canadian team victories in three of the six event finals. Each country selected its top competitor for the three-man event finals.
“It’s a real confidence boost to win against gymnasts of this calibre,” said O’Neill who was competing at his first international meet in a year and a half following a long and arduous comeback from torn knee ligaments.
“If you have high enough start values you can control your own destiny and I was able to come out on both nights and hit my routines very well.”
“It’s been a long road back but I still have work to do,” added O’Neill who wants to help Canada qualify a full men’s team for the 2012 Olympics next fall at the world championships in Japan.
“I’m going to go back to the gym to work on adding more difficulty to my routines before the world championships.”
Other gold medal winners were China’s Lin Rongbing on pommel horse and U.S. gymnasts Tyler Mizoguchi on parallel bars and Andrew Elkind on high bar. Casey Sandy of Brampton, Ont., and Jackson Payne of Edmonton placed third on pommel horse and high bar respectively to round out the Canadian results.
“Our team really wanted to show it belonged at this level of competition and they really jelled as a team in the last week,” said Canadian men’s program director Jeff Thompson of Vancouver.
O’Neill and Sandy also won gold in Friday’s team event along with Jason Scott of Richmond, B.C., and Nathan Gafuik of Calgary. For a complete set of results click here http://kyleshewfeltgymfest.com/competitions/artistic-gymnastics/mens-results/
