SHENZHEN, China -- Calgary’s Nathan Gafuik topped the field in two events and charged to the bronze medal in the men’s individual all around competition on Monday at the World University Games.
Gafuik, a key member of the Canadian men’s gymnastics team as it gears up for the 2012 Olympics next summer, scored 88.350 points for all six events in a tight race for the medals.
Mikola Kuksenkov of the Ukraine won the gold with 89.050 points and Shoichi Yamamoto of Japan scored 88.90 to capture the silver medal.
“I was solid throughout and it was nice not to have any major errors,” said Gafuik.
Casey Sandy of Brampton, Ont., who also qualified for the all around final, finished 7th, making Canada the only country in the competition with two gymnasts in the top ten.
Gafuik, one of just three holdovers from Canada’s 2008 Olympic team, will have a chance to win more medals in the individual event finals on Tuesday when he competes again on vault, parallel bars, floor and high bar.
“It’s always difficult to be consistent day in and day out and for both Nathan and Casey to hit their routines two days in a row with only a minimal amount of rest is very impressive,” said Canadian men’s program director Jeff Thomson of Vancouver.
“The all around field here was a strong group. The winner here placed fourth at the last world championships so that shows just how well our guys performed.”
