SHENZEN, China -- Canada up with with a strong showing in men’s gymnastics at the World University Games on Sunday, placing fourth among 27 countries in the team competition.
Japan won gold with a score of 269.200 points, China took took the silver at 265.650 and Romania scooped the bronze with a score of 264.350.
Led by two-time Olympian Nathan Gafuik of Calgary the Canadian squad finished with a total score of 261.75.
Other members of the Canadian team were Casey Sandy of Brampton, Ont., Jackson Payne of Edmonton and Jayd Lukenchuk of Saskatchewan.
Results from the team event also determined the field for the all around and event finals with Gafuik and Sandy both advancing to Monday’s individual all around final.
Gafuik, who has battled an assortment of injuries since the Beijing Olympics, finished second overall in a field of more than 100 competitors, to earn his spot in the all around final.
Sandy, who returned to the Canadian team two years ago after a stellar career at Penn State University in the NCAA, also won a spot in the final with an 11th place finish.
“We’re really pleased with these results,” said Canadian program director Jeff Thomson of Vancouver. “The full team size is five gymnasts but we just brought four and that meant that all of our guys had to nail their performances and that’s what they did. This shows our preparations for the world championships this fall and Olympic qualification and going well.”
