GUADALAJARA -- Two last-minute scratches left Rosannagh MacLennan of Toronto and Keegan Soehn of Red Deer, Alta., as Canada’s lone competitors in the trampoline finals on Tuesday at the Pan Am Games.

Rising to the occasion, MacLennan and Soehn soared to double gold in the men’s and women’s individual events after teammates Karen Cockburn of  Toronto and Charles Thibault of Quebec City were forced to withdraw due to illness.

MacLennan, competing for the first time since a scary crash two weeks ago at the last World Cup meet of the season in Denmark, finished well ahead of Americans Dakota Earnest and Alaina Williams.

“I had a few bruises and a bit of a sore ankle after the crash but it didn’t stop me from training,” said MacLennan, who toned down the difficulty in her routine to make sure she got through it cleanly.

Cockburn, the defending Pan Am champion, was forced to drop out of a major meet for the second time in less than a year.

Just before the world championships last year, the three-time Olympian was knocked out of action after complications following dental surgery.

In the men’s event, Soehn also dominated the final en route to the gold medal, leaving runner up Rafael Andrade of Brazil more than three points behind.

“Everybody was falling which put some pressure on me and I think I handled it well,” said Soehn, a last-minute replacement for injured veteran Jason Burnett of Toronto.

“I thought I had a good chance for a medal here, but finishing first was a big surprise. I did two awesome routines in the prelims and I did almost the same optional routine in the final. I just tucked one skill in the middle to make sure I made it to the end.”

In other events on Tuesday, rhythmic gymnast Mariam Chamilova of Maple, Ont., finally reached the podium after three fourth-place finishes earlier in the competition, winning the bronze medal in the clubs final. Despite another strong routine in the ribbon final, Chamilova placed fifth.

Former Canadian junior champion Maria Kitkarska of Montreal placed 6th and 7th in the clubs and ribbon events respectively.

In the group event, Brazil edged Canada and the U.S. for first place in the three ribbons and two hoops final, to complete gold medal sweep.

The Canadian group earned its second silver medal of the Games to add to the bronze it won on Monday in the five-ball event final.

Members of the team are Katrina Cameron of Mississauga, Ont., Alexandra Landry of Ajax, Ont., and Kelsey Titmarsh of Thornhill, Ont., and Toronto natives Rose Cossar, Anastasiya Muntyanu and Anjelika Reznik.
