November 14, 2011
CALGARY -- It’s down to the short strokes for the Canadian men’s gymnastics team.
The seven-member team, including Albert gymnasts Nathan Gafuik of Calgary and Brandon O’Neill and Jackson Payne of Edmonton, will attend two training camps in Calgary leading up to a final Olympic qualification meet to be held in January.
To clinch one of just 12 full team berths at the Games next summer the Canadian team needs a top-four finish at the Olympic qualifier.
The team earned spot at the qualification meet by finishing 12th at the recent world championships in Tokyo. The top eight nations qualified directly for the 2012 Games while teams ranked 9th to 16th advanced to the pre-Olympic meet on January 10th in London, England.
Other members of the Canadian team are: Casey Sandy of Brampton, Ont., Jayd Lukenchuk of Saskatoon, Ken Ikeda of Abbotsford, B.C., and Kevin Lytwyn of Stony Creek, Ont.
Both training camps will be held at the Calgary Gymnastics Centre (GGC) with the first from November 15-22 and the second from December 13-20.
The GGC is located at:179 Canada Olympic Road Southwest Calgary.
A final preparation camp will take place in Lowestoft, England with the British team in January.
Media are invited to attend designated training sessions.
