SHENZHEN, China -- Calgary’s Nathan Gafuik won his second medal in as many days at the World University Games on Tuesday, adding silver in the men’s vault final to the bronze he picked up on Monday in the all around competition.
Gafuik also competed in three other event finals, placing fourth on high bar, sixth on parallel bars and seventh on floor.
In the vault final Gafuik went last and earned 16.112 points to finish just behind gold medallist Flavius Koczi of Romania with a score of 16.237.
"It feels pretty good. It's not exactly the medal I wanted, but it'll do," said Gafuik, a key member of Canada’s rebuilding men’s gymnastics squad as it gears up to qualify for the 2012 Olympics at the world championships this fall in Tokyo.
Gafuik, an Athabasca University student, came close to adding a third medal to his collection from Shenzhen in the high bar event but was denied by the final competitor and eventual gold medallist Huezhang Chen of China, who dropped him from third to fourth in the standings.
“It was a bit of a messy routine and it would have been nice to hit that one clean,” said Gafuik, a member of the 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams.
Canadian team officials were delighted with the overall performance of the team which also included Jayd Lukenchuk of Saskatoon, Casey Sandy of Brampton, Ont., and Jackson Payne of Edmonton.
“It shows our preparations for the world championships are right on target,” said Canadian program director Jeff Thomson of Vancouver.
The FISU squad will join other members of the senior team at a training camp in Edmonton when it returns to Canada.
