National Gymnastics Week kicked off its second decade on Monday with a new look and a renewed commitment to celebrate gymnastics in all its forms.

First launched in 2002, National Gymnastics Week brings together over 700 clubs across the country to promote the benefits of gymnastics to people of all ages and abilities.

From bouncing five year olds starting out in their first recreational programs to elite athletes aiming to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics, National Gymnastics Week has something for everyone.

Alberta Gymnastics Federation kicked things off with Mall Demonstrations at Southcentre and West Edmonton Mall. There were 14 groups, made of a variety of ages,  showing off their skills and creativity.

One of the highlights of National Gymnastics Week this year from February 13-19 is the debut of Gymnastics Hour on Saturday, February 18th.

Clubs across the country will open their doors from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. EST for a fun hour of activities designed to get Canadians out of the house and into the gym.

At the same time, the best artistic gymnasts in Canada will be gathered in one spot at the Hershey Sports Zone in Mississauga, Ont., as they compete at the 2012 Elite Canada event.

Alberta Gymnastics Federation’s coloring contest just wrapped up on Friday and the staff will be choosing their favorites. Check back to see who won the age categories and the pictures they submitted.

Another new activity this year is the Gym Revolution Video Challenge, a joint effort of Gymnastics Canada and Boulevard Travel. Participants have been invited to produce and submit short YouTube videos telling why they love gymnastics, in keeping with the National Gymnastics Week theme of “I Love Gymnastics.”

Voting has now begun and the video with the most YouTube “LIKES” at the end of the week will win a trip for two at the 2012 Viterra Canadian Gymnastics Championships to be held May 22-26 in Regina.

Two of the videos currently on the You Tube channel are from AGF members so make sure you show your support and “like” one or both of them! Visit the National Gymnastics Week YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/nationalgymweek and “LIKE” your favourite video.

If you are hosting an event or participated in one already send us your pictures or post them on our Facebook page so we can all see how you celebrated!
