MISSISSAUGA, Ont.-- Eleven-year-old Shallon Olsen of Vancouver stepped up from the novice to junior age category without a hitch on Saturday, taking the all around title with a sparkling performance at the Elite Canada gymnastics meet.
Olsen, still eligible to compete as a novice, easily topped the field of 28 competitors in her junior debut with a total score of 55.950 points, dazzling judges and spectators alike with a difficult double twisting, Yurchenko vault rarely performed by such a young gymnast.
Adding to her first-place finish on vault, Olsen placed second on floor, third on uneven bars and tied for fourth on beam.
“I had to practise the vault and keep doing it until I got it right and then my coach said, ‘ok, its time to do the skill in competition,’ said Olsen, who first performed the skill in competition at last year’s Canadian championships.
Victoria-Kayen Woo of Montreal placed second all around with a score of 53.900 points and Maegan Chant of Waterdown, Ont., was third at 52.350.
In the men’s senior event finals the winners were Anderson Loran of Saskatoon (high bar and pommel horse), Scott Morgan of Vancouver (floor), Nathan Gafuik of Calgary (parallel bars), Hugh Smith of Halifax (vault), and Simon Porter of Mississauga,Ont., (rings).
“It’s the first competition of the year, so my goal was to come in with some new routines and look for consistency and I was pretty happy with where I’m at right now,” said Morgan, who also picked up a bronze medal on vault and silver on rings.
In the men’s junior competition Zachary Clay of Chilliwack won the all around title and in the women’s novice event Oleksandra Yermolchuk of Toronto was tops all around.
The competition concludes on Sunday with the women’s junior and senior event finals.
