Sports Day in Canada
September 14, 2011
The second annual Sports Day in Canada, taking place on Saturday, September 17, 2011, is a national celebration of sport, from grassroots to high-performance levels, in communities across the country. It is an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the power of sport to build communities, fortify our national spirit and facilitate healthy, active living.
Sports Day in Canada caps off a week of thousands of local sporting events and activities, open houses and try-it days showcasing sport at all levels, and includes a special television broadcast on CBC Sports.
“Gymnastics Canada, with more than 240,000 registered members in over 700 clubs across the country, is right at home as part of Sports Day in Canada,” says Jean-Paul Caron, the President/CEO of the national governing body for gymnastics sports in Canada.
Highlighting Gymnastics Canada’s participation at this year’s event are Toronto’s own Olympic and World championship trampoline medal winners Karen Cockburn, Rosannagh MacLennan and Jason Burnett. All three train at the Skyriders club in Richmond Hill, long a hotbed for the country’s top trampoline gymnasts.
Friday, September 16 is a national day for Canadians to show their love and support for sport by wearing a jersey, team or club uniform to school, work or play. Sport organizations, teams and clubs are invited to host their own local Sports Day in Canada celebration event anytime during the week of September 10 - 17. You can register and find events across Canada at www.cbcsports.ca/sportsday.
