MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., won the women’s all around title on the first day of competition Friday at the Elite Canada gymnastics meet.
Vaculik, competing for the first time since helping Canada qualify a full women’s team for the 2012 Olympics last month in England, topped the field on beam, placed second on floor and uneven bars and was sixth on vault for a total score of 56.350 points.
“It felt great and it was a lot of fun,” said Vaculik. “After the Olympic qualification event, I got right back to work in training because I want to keep on improving. It’s a very exciting time.”
Vaculik, one of the front runners to win a spot on the Olympic team, competes again on Sunday in all four event finals.
Brittany Rogers of Coquitlam, B.C. placed second all around with a score of 55.150 points and Victoria Moors of Cambridge, Ont., was third at 55.050.
Rogers, continuing her remarkable comeback from a career threatening ankle injury, and Moors, the 2011 Canadian junior champion, also competed at the Olympic qualifier last month.
Six women gymnasts, including one reserve, will be named to the Olympic team following a selection process leading up to the Games in July.
In the men’s senior all around competition, Robert Watson of Richmond, B.C., was the surprise winner with a score of 84.100 points.
Anderson Loran of Saskatoon was second with 83.850 and Hugh Smith of Halifax was third at 83.150.
In the junior event Zachary Clay of Chilliwack, B.C. topped the field with 79.650 points. Joshua Stuart of Richmond, B.C., was second with 77.450 and Nicholas Mallia of Toronto was third at 73.400.
