AIRDRIE, Alta. -- Three-time Olympic medal winner Karen Cockburn and Beijing silver medalist Jason Burnett highlight the 2011 Canada Cup trampoline and tumbling meet July 28-30 at Genesis Place in Airdrie, Alta.
Alberta athletes also figure prominently in the line-up with Airdrie’s own world champion Corissa Boychuk leading the way in the women’s double mini trampoline competition, 2011 Canadian champion Alex Seifert in men’s tumbling and double mini, newly crowned Canadian men’s trampoline champion Keegan Soehn of Red Deer and 2011 Canadian trampoline and double mini youth champion Lexi Giesbrecht of Calgary.
Cockburn, 30, who is aiming to win a Canadian record fourth straight Olympic medal next summer, comes to the Canada Cup hot on the heels of stellar performances at back to back World Cup meets in China and Japan at the beginning of July.
The 12-time Canadian champion showed she’s more than up to the challenge of another Olympic Games, winning four medals including a gold and a bronze in the individual events and double gold in synchro at the two events.
Burnett, working his way back into top form after missing most of last season with a broken ankle, was also flying high at his last World Cup despite just missing a medal in the men’s final after leading the field in the prelims.
“I was very happy with the way I competed in Japan,” says Burnett. “I had a lot of difficulty in my optional routine and for the most part it went really well. All the big skills were there, it’s just a matter of fine tuning then some more.”
Other recent World Cup medal winners competing at the Canada Cup are Rosannagh MacLennan and Mariah Madigan who each paired up with Cockburn to win synchro gold.
Cockburn, Burnett, MacLennan, also a member of the 2008 Olympic team, and Madigan, lead a large contingent from the Skyriders Trampoline Club in Toronto, a longtime hotbed of the sport in Ontario.
This year’s Canada Cup roster of over 220 athletes includes competitors from nine foreign countries, including the United States, Denmark, Czech Republic and South Africa.
The competition begins on Thursday, July 28th and runs through Saturday, July 30th.
